Initiation To The Writing Life
I have no idea what to write about.
And yet here I am writing.
Why, you ask?
Keep on reading and you'll know why.
So here's the thing.. As part of my noble intention to finish reading my huge pile of unread books, I began reading "The Right to Write” by Julie Cameron a few days ago. The book was given to me by Mbak Rima, who shares the same passion I have about writing. The difference is that she has already pursued writing further, as in quit her job and took a writing course in Harvard. Talk about inspirational career move, huh?
So, anyway.. My takeout so far from the book (Disclaimer: I haven't finished reading the book) is that we need to free ourselves to write whatever and whenever. Sometimes we think too much about writing that we never get to do the writing itself. We think too much about what we’re supposed to write, how perfect it’s supposed to be, and so on. While in fact all you have to do is just to write without worrying about anything else.
According to Cameron, part of the initiation to the writing life is to get used to just write. Not worrying about the content, about the ending, about the structure. Just write. Spare 30 minutes of your time everyday to just write, and before you know it, suddenly your writing becomes better every time. So that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. From now on, I’ll try to blog (because this is the only place I know where to write) as often as I can, even if I don’t know what to write about. Which is.. kind of like the situation I’m in right now ^^;; But hey, at least I initiate myself to the writing life, right?
Over and out. For now.
