Truth, Cry, and Lie

I have a question. Do you agree with the use of white lies? Or are you the kind of person who thinks that honesty’s the best policy?

I believe that every person has a different standard on this matter, and I also believe that there is no precise benchmark on the right scale, the right balance, between brutal facts and white lies. It all depends on the situation, other parties involved, etc etc.. So in the end, it’s all going to be very subjective. I think I can say that I won’t mind doing a little white lie.. as long as it’s for a greater good (influenced by Harry Potter’s final book here ;p), and applying the same standard for myself, I think I can also say that a little white lie to me won’t hurt as well. Because let’s face it.. some things are just better left unsaid, and what you don’t know can’t hurt you, correct?

Now, a little bit further on white lies. True, they can’t hurt.. but it’s only for as long as you don’t know about it, Once you know, the cut can be quite deep. Even when you know that the lie is for your own good. And it gets a little bit more complicated when the other person doesn’t know you know (a bit “Friends” déjà vu here… the Monica-Chandler secret, remember?). In a way, you don’t want the person to know you know, because that could make things more complicated. But since you already know about it, you can’t really pretend that you know nothing, and that everything is just the same as before. I guess it’s probably similar to how Rachel feels, in the episode where she found out about Monica and Chandler. She wanted to let them know that she knows about them, but once she heard them saying they lied for her own good, she backed off, pretending she knew nothing.

So, what do you think? Which one would be better, proclaiming you know the truth so there would be no more secrets, or just wait until the truth is revealed to you.. to respect the white lie intention in the first place—for a greater good, just like Rachel?

There’s a truth behind a cry
and there’s a cry behind a lie
on every thought that comes out wrong
just learn from it and please stay strong

there’s a truth behind a cry
and there’s a cry behind a lie
there’s a hope on every fright
there’s a light on every night
